Yesterday Tirza Brüggemann received her certificate from the Dutch Research Council, NWO, to start her Ph.D. project, “Flashes of Understanding.” Tirza and the other thirty laureates received their grant from Jet Bussemaker, the Dutch Minister of Education, Culture, and Science, at Tirza’s own school, the Amsterdams Lyceum.
Just before receiving her certificate Tirza lucidly explained her project to the packed auditorium. “Flashes of Understanding” investigates whether we identify and empathize differently with animals in poetry than in novels. She will be supervised by Prof. dr. Diederik Oostdijk and Dr. Kristine Steenbergh, along with Dr. Bettine Siertsema from Philosophy.
During the reception afterwards the new Ph.D. candidate had an animated discussion with the Minister and the professor. They talked about the “New University,” about teaching and research, and the recent elections.
